Description

Mexico Viejo (formerly Plaza Azteca) proudly reintroduced itself to Charlottesville in 2025 with colorful new store on 29 North. While Plaza Azteca, whose name has origins in Jalisco, began in Charlottesville over 30 years ago, Mexico Viejo can now claim the title of Charlottesville’s largest and most colorful Mexican restaurant.

Culinary & Cultural Style

The Mexico Viejo menu is expansive and ranges across all the typical Mexican classics, from enchiladas, burritos, quesadillas, nachos and sizzling fajitas. Jalisco-style has evolved with American tastes to emphasize meats seasoned to a more moderate spice level. Their entrees are hearty and savory. Birria, pozole, carne en su jugo, and tortas ahogadas dishes thrive here! You’ll also enjoy fresh guacamole prepared table-side. This is the only place in Charlottesville where that’s done. Oh, and their margaritas hit the spot too!

Mexico Viejo is very family friendly with a colorful decor that matches a Mexican spirit of celebration. Their large dining room comfortably seats parties ranging from 2 to 20, and the ambiance is as interesting as the menu. They service is authentic, quick and polite.

Specials

Free chips and salsa are always crowd-pleasing, and the 3-7 pm Happy Hour includes jumbo margaritas for $6.50.
