Mockingbird is an upscale “southern eatery” in Belmont introduced by the hospitality group behind the longtime popular restaurant across the street, The Local. Mockingbird’s name is an allusion to Harper Lee’s Southern classic, “To Kill a Mocking Bird,” and celebrates the Alabama roots of acclaimed chef Melissa Close-Hart. Her mantra is “Feeding the Soul with Southern charm and the bounty of Virginia,” and you can count on a delicious meal that might start with fried green tomatoes, or an open-faced crawfish po’ boy or confit Double H Farm’s pork belly, before advancing to an entree of shrimp & grits or crispy chicken & waffles.
A lively bar and elegant seating within a warmly-restored 19th Century building or outside along a street that bustles at dinnertime, Mockingbird is an exciting new addition to Charlottesville’s dining scene.
