What to Expect
Now & Zen is a modern, intimate eatery that offers classic sushi and eclectic Japanese main courses. The energy in their small, frequently bustling main dining room, which holds approximately 30, is exhilarating. The menu is constantly fresh and arrives from polite and focused servers, who carry dishes from the adjacent kitchen counter. The Now and Zen dining experience is consistent and satisfying in a style consistent with Japanese origins.
In the Beginning
Now and Zen was founded over a decade ago by Toshi Sato, who first came to Charlottesville in the 1990s to co-found the legendary Tokyo Rose sushi joint and night club. Next, he opened Now & Zen one block off Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall. With seating for 30 max, the space is intimate and the menu exquisite. Now & Zen is for sushi connoisseurs and is a great dining choice after spending a day shopping or visiting the various entertainment centers downtown. With several vegan options, Now & Zen is a perfect choice for large group outings. In the Summer of 2025, Toshi stepped away and handed his beautiful creation to his longtime sous chef, Bernie Linn, who continues a unique Charlottesville tradition.
