Southern Crescent Galley and Bar rises like a vaguely haunted Victorian ideal in Charlottesville’s fashionable Belmont neighborhood. Have you happened upon New Orlean’s Garden District? The restaurant’s wrap-around porch and magnolia-lined patio confirm that you have! This popular restaurant, owned by Delta denizens Lucinda Ewell and Ian Day, is the fulfillment of their aspiration to evoke New Orleans and provide an “island vibe.” To be sure, to enjoy a Sazerac inside at the bar or outside on their patio beneath bead-dripping branches is to come as close to the Crescent City as Charlottesville can know!

The seafood is primarily “wild-caught” USA, except for the conch which comes from the Bahamas. The bread for the Po’ Boys comes from Leidenheimer Bakery, while the bread for the Muffulettas comes from Gambinos, and the pies hail from Family Ties and Pies.

Southern Crescent offers a “rum-focused cocktail program,” mixed with fresh squeezed juices, house-made syrups, infusion, shrubs, and liqueurs. A single taste is all that’s required to discern a certain literary tone that permeates the setting, as you suspect Ignatius J. Reilly to be right around the corner. We recommend you not wait until Fat Tuesday to catch this scene!
