Though the early days are unrecorded, New Dominion Bookshop opened its doors to Charlottesville in 1924, making it the oldest independent bookseller in Virginia today. C.C. Wells bought New Dominion Bookshop in 1926 and moved it to the Downtown Mall. He ran the shop until 1987, when Carol Troxell, a longtime employee, purchased and took over the business.
Under Mrs. Troxell’s guidance, the shop became known for personal service and its thoughtfully curated collection. Her valiant and much beloved successor, Julia Kudravetz, purchased the shop in October of 2017, carrying on the traditions set by her predecessors.
New Dominion Bookshop is located on the Charlottesville Downtown Mall at 404 East Main St. It is open Monday through Sunday and frequently hosts events featuring renowned authors and local writers.
