Editor’s Note: The Downtown Gift Card program has been on the wane for several years, so much so that we don’t recommend using them as too many — perhaps all — merchants no longer accept them. The organization, Friends of Charlottesville’s Downtown, recently informed us that the program “is going away.”
Below is information that relates to the origins of the gift card program.
Introduced in December 2020 by The Downtown Business Association of Charlottesville, the Gift Card has made it easier it shop local, particularly downtown, in and around the Downtown Mall.
Downtown Cville Gift Cards enable all lovers of Cville to Buy Local and Support Local Businesses that are owned and operated by Charlottesvilliians. The same folks whose shelves and menus offer amazing style and quality are also the folks who’ve fought through the pandemic, and labored with love to remain open to serve our community. Downtown Gift Cards are a great way to love them back and to extend your shopping value across numerous stores and restuarants.
Purchasing gift cards is easy. You may buy them online or purchase them directly at Darling Boutique or Magpie Knits, or at a self-service kiosk located next to Grit Coffee inside the York Place Building on the downtown mall.
…but please note that the Gift Card program has been phasing out for several years now, and there is no certainty that shops and restaurants will continue to honor gift card. Contact specific merchants ahead to be sure.

Shop Local is a communal response to a nation sedated by Amazon. And Shop Local is the best retail therapy, whether that comes from a unique gift found in a boutique shop or a simmering entree in a warm downtown restaurant. This year let’s show our support for Charlottesville’s creative economy — and give an excellent gift to your loved ones — through the Downtown Cville Gift Card.
